The Danish Girl: Tom Hooper's drama's influence on Copenhagen

Walking the streets of Copenhagen is one thing; walking the streets of Copenhagen having seen The Danish Girl is another.

As someone who was introduced to artist Einar Wegener’s transformation into transgender pioneer Lili Elbe via Tom Hooper's period retelling, I had no idea quite how deeply this story ran through the veins of Lili’s homeland.

One meander through the city streets later and it's a sure bet you'll have stumbled across a painting, building or street that withholds some form of connection to Hooper's Oscar-winning film.

One such location is the Nyhavn canal district, a cobbled waterfront home to numerous picturesque locales. Only a year previous had the area been transported into a 1920s fish market with Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander strolling around in character as Ebe and artist Gerda Wegener.

A nearby worker based in an office above restaurant Cap Horn tells me how she had glimpsed the two in action just by a mere glance out of the window; Little did she realise she was watching an Oscar-winner to be.

Other destinations used during production include Magstaede, Det Kongelige Teater, Kunsthal Charlottenborg and the Frederiksstad district (take note: each place warrants a visit).

Most memorable, however, are the pastoral buildings home to Ben Whishaw's character Henrik – Lili's love interest – which remained untouched for the film; on the day that I visit, the Nyboder naval barracks are barren yet beautiful, much like in the image below.

To gather an effective sense of The Danish Girl’s full importance, visitors to Copenhagen need simply go wandering.

On one of our many coffee stops, my party happens across a twentysomething who, through conversation, drops in how he was an extra in one of the film's key moments; he can be glimpsed in the scene where Lili researches sex reassignment in a Parisian library (Denmark's Fiolstæde Reading Room standing in for the French capital).

Another surprise came during a visit to Arken Museum of Modern Art, a touchstone building based outside of the city's centre. We inadvertently realise the museum is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the works of Gerda Wegener.

Seeing her story expressed through the real-life paintings of Lili fills you with a sense of melancholic realisation of the duo's very existence. Open until January 2017, the gallery serves as the film's perfect accompaniment bolstering any Copenhagen visit. (Sidenote: don't miss the Niki de Saint Phalle exhibition also.)

The Danish Girl's true lasting legacy is the way in which Copenhagen openly provides a broader understanding of Lili and Gerda's remarkably touching story.

World Leaders and Royalty Mourn the Death of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej

Thailand's Royal Palace announced on Thursday that King Bhumibol Adulyadej died at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital, and people around the world responded with an outpouring of grief.

Hundreds of Thais had gathered by thehospital since Sunday to chant prayers and offer flowers after news spread of the monarch's deteriorating health. By Wednesday, the palace announced that the 88-year-old leader's kidneys and liver were not working properly, and his health had "overall not yet stabilized."

The king—who was the world's longest reining monarch, having been on the throne for seven decades—is widely revered in Thailand. He will be succeededby his son and male heir Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, says the country's Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, who has led the country since a 2014 coup. He says Thailand will hold a yearlong grieving period.

Here is how world leaders reacted to the death:

U.S. President Barack Obama sent his condolences and recalled the king's " grace and warmth, as well as his deep affection and compassion for the Thai people,"according to a White House statement.

He also said the late monarch was "a tireless champion of his country's development and demonstrated unflagging devotion to improving the standard of living of the Thai people.With a creative spirit and a drive for innovation, he pioneered new technologies that have rightfully received worldwide acclaim. His Majesty leaves a legacy of care for the Thai people that will be cherished by future generations."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the king "one of the tallest leaders of all time" who was "widely revered by his people."

Muhammad Ali's Death: Can Head Injuries Cause Parkinson's

Boxing champion Muhammad Ali lived with Parkinson's disease for three decades before his death on Friday (June 3) at the age of 74, and many have wondered whether Ali's boxing career caused him to develop the neurological disorder.

Although it's likely that frequent head injuries played a role in the boxer's Parkinson's disease, certain genes may have also increased his susceptibility to the disease, experts said.

It's likely his repeated head injuries contributed to his Parkinson's disease," said Dr. Barbara Changizi, a neurologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, who was not involved with Ali's treatment. But given how young Ali was when he was diagnosed with the disorder — the boxer was 42 — there's a "strong chance that genetics played a significant role as well," Changizi said. The average age of Parkinson's onset is 60 years old, according to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. 

In patients with Parkinson's disease, the brain cells that produce a chemical called dopamine start to die off. Because dopamine is important for the control of muscle movement, Parkinson's patients experience symptoms such as tremors, slowed movements and muscle stiffness.

In most cases, the exact reason that the dopamine-producing cells start to die is not known, Changizi said. But certain genes appear to increase people's risk of developing the disease at a relatively young age. For this reason, "when you have young onset disease, we are more suspicious" of genetics contributing, Changizi said.

Still, head trauma has also been linked with Parkinson's disease. In a 2013 review study, researchers found that people with head trauma that resulted in a concussion were 57 percent more likely to develop Parkinson's disease, than people who never experienced such head trauma.

Head injuries can cause inflammation in the brain, which may lead to changes in cells and brain structures that contribute to Parkinson's, Changizi said.

And injuries that specifically damage the part of the brain that contains dopamine-producing cells, called the substantia nigra, can also lead to Parkinson's, Changizi said.

After Ali's death, some people asked on social media sites whether Ali could have also suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease found in athletes such as football players who have experienced repeated blows to the head.

But Changizi said, "Parkinson's disease would be enough to explain a lot of his symptoms."

The official cause of Ali's death was septic shock, according to news sources. Septic shock is a complication that can happen in people who have an infection. It can involve bodywide inflammation, and a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Ali had been hospitalized a week before he died for a respiratory infection, sources reported.

Islamic State terror attacks to INCREASE after defeat in Iraq and Syria, warns US general

SLAMIC State will use their military defeat in Iraq and Syria to morph into a global terror organisation capable of waging increasingly deadly attacks on the West, a senior US general has warned.

Commander Lieutenant General Sean MacFarland, who heads the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve, issued the bleak assessment after spending almost a year fighting against ISIS in Iraq.

The experienced general said the future of the Islamist group was as an al-Qaeda style insurgency once its territory had been carved up in the Middle East.

He said: "Military success in Iraq and Syria will not necessarily mean the end of Daesh [ISIS].

"We can expect the enemy to adapt, to morph into a true insurgent force and terrorist organisation capable of horrific attacks like the one here on July 3rd in Baghdad and those others we've seen around the world."

More than 300 people were killed in the Iraqi capital on that day when ISIS bombers struck a commercial street in the Karrada district of central Baghdad.

The attack was one of the deadliest in Iraq since Saddam Hussein was toppled 13 years ago.

Lt Gen MacFarland also warned that ISIS would attempt to move their strategic bases from cities that have fallen to coalition forces, including the town of Manbij which served as a key supply route between Turkey and ISIS' de-facto capital Raqqa.

He said: "They may re-locate or try to re-constitute that capability elsewhere but it won't be as convenient for the enemy if they do that and it won't be as effective."
